• Malaria:
differently from the mainland, the risk of contracting malaria on
the coast and particularly in Zanzibar is very low.
In any case, your general practitioner will be able to supply you
with appropriate advice.
• Currency: The local currency is the Tanzanian
Schilling, one euro is equivalent to 1900-2100 schilling, ome
dollar around 1500 shilling, American Dollars (issuednot
before 2006) and Euros are accepted. Credit cards are not very
popular.
• Language: The local language is Swahili but
English is widely used , Italian is also frequently spoken in some
beach resorts.
• Religion: Zanzibar has always been a crossroad
of cultures from Africa, Middle East, Asia and Europe. The majority
are Muslims who peacefully live together with a minority of
Christians and other religions.
• Spices: Zanzibar is also famous as the Spice
Island and for many centuries the whole economy of the island was
linked to cultivating and trading of these spices, particularly
cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper, and many other spices originally
imported by the sultans of Oman.
• Advices: It is compulsory to have a passport
which is valid for at least 6 months and an entrance visa which can
be obtained on arrival at the airport or at Tanzanian Consulate
before leaving your country.
It costs 50 $. We wish to remind you that there is a 33 $
departure tax paid to the local government. On the last day, it is
advisable to get to the airport with the money in dollars as not to
lose money on the exchange rate.
